As the European Union plans to include shipping in the Emissions Trading System (ETS) from next year, Maersk recently announced that it plans to levy carbon emission surcharges on customers from the first quarter of next year to share the cost of complying with ETS and ensure transparency.

"The cost of complying with ETS may be great, so it will affect the transportation cost. It is expected that with the coming into effect of the revised legislation, the volatility of EU quotas (EUA) traded in ETS may increase. To ensure transparency, we plan to levy these fees as independent surcharges from the first quarter of 2023. " Sebastian Von Hayn, Maersk Asia/EU head of network and market, said in a report to clients.

According to Maersk's website, the minimum surcharge will be imposed on the route from Northern Europe to the Far East, with a surcharge of 99 euros for ordinary containers and 149 euros for refrigerated containers.
